Old Dominion University invites educators, researchers, graduate students and other members of the academic community to take part in the 48th Annual Spring Conference on the Teaching of Writing, dedicated to the theme “Slow Reading in a Fast World: Writing and Reading as Critical and Rhetorical Engagement.”
In a world shaped by information overload, rapidly evolving digital communication and the growing use of artificial intelligence, the ability to read attentively, interpret critically and write meaningfully is more important than ever. This year’s conference aims to foster academic dialogue on the relationship between reading and writing, the role of critical and rhetorical engagement, and the ways in which these essential skills can be developed in contemporary educational contexts.
The conference welcomes educators, teachers of writing, language arts and literature, linguists, researchers and graduate students interested in exploring current challenges and emerging approaches to reading and writing education.
Participants are invited to contribute through a variety of formats, including individual presentations, panels, roundtables, workshops, teaching demonstrations and sessions focused on sustainable teaching practices and teachers as readers and writers.
Suggested areas of discussion include:
- The relationship between reading and writing and the development of critical thinking skills;
- Slow reading, close reading and the interpretation of texts;
- The challenges and opportunities presented by AI-generated content in education;
- Digital and multimodal texts and their implications for teaching;
- Inclusive and culturally sustaining pedagogies;
- Innovative approaches to writing instruction and sustainable teaching practices.
Special opportunity for international participants: the $25 registration fee is waived for international attendees.
Educators, researchers and graduate students interested in contributing are encouraged to explore the Call for Proposals and submit their proposals.
