Transformative Storytelling: Stories that Connect Us. Guided Autobiography Summit 2026

October 14–16, 2026 | Online / Global Event | Free to Attend

We are pleased to share an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in life writing, personal storytelling, memory, reflection and the transformative power of stories.

The Guided Autobiography (GAB) Summit 2026, organised by the Birren Center for Autobiographical Studies, will take place online from October 14 to 16, 2026 and will bring together life writers, Guided Autobiography instructors and participants from around the world.

A global celebration of storytelling

Whether you are eager to begin writing your own life story or are already a Guided Autobiography instructor looking for fresh perspectives and opportunities for professional development, the GAB Summit offers a unique space to learn, share and connect.

Over three days, participants will have the opportunity to explore different approaches to storytelling and life writing, discover new perspectives on memory and personal history, and connect with an international community of people who share an interest in stories, reflection and human connection.

For life writers: Discover the power of your story

Have you ever wanted to write about your life but were not sure where to begin?

Guided Autobiography (GAB) offers a structured approach to life writing, helping participants explore their personal history and discover meaning and insights within their experiences.

At the Summit, experienced GAB instructors will share their approaches, experiences and perspectives on helping people explore and communicate their life stories.

What is Guided Autobiography?

Guided Autobiography (GAB) is a method for writing about one’s life in short, manageable pieces, traditionally working on approximately two pages at a time. The method was created by gerontologist Dr. James Birren and is now continued through the work of the Birren Center.

Today, there are more than 800 GAB instructors around the world. Through GAB, participants can explore their life journeys in a supportive environment, reflect on significant experiences and connect with others interested in personal storytelling and reflection.

For instructors and aspiring instructors

The Summit also offers valuable opportunities for GAB instructors and those interested in becoming instructors.

Participants can gain new perspectives on teaching and facilitating life-writing groups, explore creative approaches to storytelling, consider ways of adapting GAB for different audiences, and discover ideas related to marketing, community-building and expanding the reach of their programmes.
